Hosts the Sixth Annual Preservation in a Changing Climate Conference

The City of Salem considers hosting the sixth annual Preservation in a Changing Climate Conference to address climate impacts on historic resources in the North Shore region. The conference discusses mitigation and adaptation strategies through case studies, panel presentations, and expert keynote sessions designed to enhance resiliency of historic buildings, landscapes, and neighborhoods. Salem's Preservation in a Changing Climate Committee explores strategies to help historic properties and neighborhoods adapt to rising sea levels, coastal and riverine flooding, wind damage, extreme precipitation, and other climate change challenges.

This overview is based on one climate vulnerability and adaptation planning document from Salem. The assessment examines four main climate threats: extreme heat, heavy rainfall, sea level rise, and storm surge, with projections extending to 2050 and 2100. The plan evaluates 104 city components and identifies 17 priority vulnerabilities across critical infrastructure, water, energy, stormwater, transportation, and vulnerable populations. It proposes 43 adaptation strategies including seawall improvements, tide gate installations, stormwater upgrades, backup power systems, and building modifications to address flooding and climate impacts.
