Our Commitment to Web Accessibility

Climate Herald is committed to providing a fully accessible website experience for all users of all abilities, including those who rely on assistive technologies like screen readers, screen enlargement software, and alternative keyboard input devices to navigate the web.

Ongoing Efforts to Ensure Accessibility

The website was built do comply with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) version 2.1 and later updated to meet WCAG 2.2.

These are internationally agreed-upon standards that cover a wide range of recommendations and best practices for making content useable. As we add functionality to our website, all designs, code, and content entry practices are checked against these standards.

Accessibility Features On Our Website

The following is a list of items we have included in our website to improve its accessibility:

  • A skip to content link is provided
  • A skip Carousel link is provided to bypass the Carousel elements on the home page
  • Default font size is large enough
  • Hierachical Headings are used on all pages
  • The page heirarchy is easy to understand
  • Non-decorative mages have alternative text
  • Color Contrast
  • Focus Indicators
  • Automatic font size adjustment based on web browser settings
  • Tap targets are at least 44px x 44px (except submenu dropdown icons), this meets WCAG 2.2 Level AAA
  • All elements are keyboard accessible
  • A secondary way to find things on the website is provided (Search in Header)
  • Form fields have labels
  • Forms provide a validation summary if there are submission errors
  • Forms use a simple method to prove you are human (instead of a Captcha)
  • The the complete loading time (page speed) is under 1 second for most pages
  • Cumulative layout shift (CLS) is under .1 for all pages and zero for most pages

Where We’re Improving

Third party elements are chosen from organizations which are attempting to provide an accessible interface, for example Google Maps.
