Resolutions, Ordinances, or Other Climate Legislation
This assessment is based on one piece of legislation. Resolution 4199, adopted by the City of Chandler in 2008, establishes a mandatory Green Building Program that requires new city buildings larger than 5,000 square feet to meet LEED Silver certification standards or higher when feasible. The program focuses on reducing water use, lowering energy consumption from non-renewable sources, decreasing urban heat island effects (warming caused by buildings and pavement in cities), and improving indoor air quality and comfort. To manage expenses, the city set a ten-year payback period for LEED Silver projects, meaning the energy savings must offset costs within that timeframe. Smaller buildings and renovation projects must incorporate as many green building principles as practical, and the city council can grant exceptions when appropriate.
