Resolutions, Ordinances, or Other Climate Legislation

This assessment is based on seven pieces of Milwaukee climate and sustainability legislation. Milwaukee has enacted one ordinance and six resolutions addressing environmental sustainability from 2014 to 2021. The ordinance prohibits food and beverage establishments from distributing single-use plastic straws to reduce plastic waste. The resolutions focus on supporting federal carbon emission reductions from power plants, committing to the Paris Climate Accord, establishing a task force to develop a plan for reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 45% by 2030, joining a state coalition for clean energy solutions, financing affordable net zero energy homes for low-income residents, and developing solar energy projects to meet 25% of municipal electricity needs from renewable sources by 2025. Together, these measures represent Milwaukee’s regulatory and collaborative approach to reducing emissions, expanding renewable energy, and advancing sustainability across municipal operations and the broader community.
