Regional District of Central Kootenay, BC

Resolutions, Ordinances, or Other Climate Legislation

This assessment is based on one piece of legislation. On October 30, 2019, the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary adopted a resolution declaring a climate action imperative in response to increasing climate-related disasters in the region, including severe wildfires and flooding that cost millions in recovery and prevention expenses. The resolution commits the district to reducing greenhouse gas emissions—the gases that contribute to climate change—by 45 percent below 2010 levels by 2030 and by 100 percent by 2050, aligning with international climate targets. The district directed staff to develop a comprehensive plan within six months outlining current emission reduction efforts, strategies to help the region adapt to climate impacts, and additional actions needed to meet these emissions reduction goals across short, medium, and long-term timeframes.
